When we planned this house our brief was to have a low maintenance, warm, comfortable home, with substantial proportions, which was inexpensive to run. We wanted to ensure that the house used materials which made the home a healthy one for its occupants, such as the use of Porters paints. We spent a long time researching ways to achieve these aims. Based on these aims we used polished charcoal coloured blocks as the outer layer, the whole house is wrapped in 25mm foil board, the windows are thermal break aluminium with 6mm low-e coated toughened glass externally, 12mm argon filled gap and 6.3mm laminated glass internally. There is a heat pump hot water cylinder and 5kw north facing solar panels on the roof. The roof has external gutters and extra sized stainless steel downpipes. Tolmans Hill is just 5 minutes drive to the centre of Hobart, is close to UTAS, a new up market Hill Street Grocery store, a number of private schools, and walking distance to Hobart College and Mt Nelson Primary School.
